Nutrition in IBD:milk, dairy products, lactose and Co.

Today on nutrition again. The issue is dairy products and lactose. Kind of a delicate issue to write about, because a lot of people know a lot about it ot rather (to say it as it is) think they know a lot about it. Because the one and only right way to handle it actually doesn`t exist (again…). So let`s have a look at it, try to pay attention to the different aspects and put the whole thing in the context of inflammarory bowel disease. Lactose is one aspect, but in dairy products there are a lot of other valuable ingredients. To say it right away: I don`t believe in strict restrictions. But I do believe in “informed application” in moderation Of course the basic question is: do you actually toleratate dairy products ? Because when you just do not tolerate it, there is no use to it. My conclusion: dairy pproducts in moderation are better than their reputation especially in IBD.

Stenosis -when the gut gets narrow

Many of you know about this issue. Stenosis means narrowing, in case of inflammatory bowel disease of the intestine. It´s a common problem in Crohn`s disease and ulcerative colitis. But how does stenosis develop ? And how “bad” or even dangerous is stenosis ? Does it need special treatment or can we just leave it as it is ? since: ” I don`t even notice it !” (most frequent phrase of patients with stenosis in the intestine). That`s what I want to write about today. What we have to take care of in case of stenosis and what we have to do about it.

Afraid of therapy ?

How comfortable are you with your therapy ? An important question, which has a practical approach like: what do I have to do ? Taking tablets ? Receiving an infusion ? Or an injection ? The other approach is not that practical on the first view. Yet I consider it even more important: how much confidence do I have in the therapy ? Do I have confidence or concerns ? And why the one or the other ?

Sports in IBD

Physical activity ! I really wanted to write about physical activity and sports. And you might say: that`s lifestyle again. More or less a common issue, doesn`have a special relation to inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn`s disease or ulcerative colitis. But is that so ? My answer is: no ! It is an extremly important and relevant issue whenever it comes to health. Which means also when it comes to the isue the issue of IBD. When we are talking about physical activity, exercise, sports in case of inflammatory bowel disease, we are talking about nothing less than a part of the therapy !
